Bossa Nova in Rio de Janeiro

Bossa Nova is a Brazilian musical style created between 50’ and 60’. The movement started in Rio de Janeiro, the songs reflected the beauty of the city in the 60’s. Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, João Donato, Nara Leão, Vinicius de Morais are some of the famous names of this movement. With the consolidaon of the Bossa Nova, some points of Rio de Janeiro, mainly between Copacabana and Ipanema, became lyrics to famous songs like Girl from Ipanema, “Chega de Saudade” and “Samba de um nota só”, which are sung and played in various corners Rio. Ideal program for those who like history, music and travel.

Suggested itinerary: 5 days / 4 nights

Day 1 – Rio de Janeiro
Arrival in Rio and transfer to hotel with guide assistance. Accommodaon at Best Western Copacabana Design, that was inspired by the Bossa Nova. Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2 – Rio de Janeiro
Breakfast. Morning departure for a half day tour to Sugar Loaf and panoramic views of Downtown Rio, including a visit at Casa Villarino (place where Tom Jobim was introduced to Vinicius de Moraes, in 1956. The delicatessen and Scotch Bar is decorated with wooden walls and has waiters from the old days. Food and beverage are not included). Return to the hotel.

Day 3 – Rio de Janeiro
Breakfast. Morning departure for a half-day tour including special venues related to Bossa Nova. Return to the hotel.
Visits of the tour: Botanical Gardens – it was a big inspiraon for Tom Jobim as something sacred. Inside the park, there is the Tom Jobim Space, formed by the Tom Jobim Theater, the Galpão of Arts and the House of the Collecons. It holds the complete collecon of Tom Jobim and maintains a permanent exhibion with photos, original scores, personal objects and videos of some performances of the composer. The site is open for visitors, except on Mondays. Restaurant and Bar Garota de Ipanema: Its name says it all! Previously known as Bar Veloso, it was redecorated and renamed to honor the music that became famous all over the world. Pictures on the walls show the memorable meengs of Vinicius de Moraes and Tom Jobim, among others. (food and beverage are not included)

Day 4 – Rio de Janeiro
Breakfast. Morning departure for a half-day tour to Corcovado. Return to the hotel.
By night tour: departure hotel to the iconic Bole´s Bar (located at the famous “Beco das Garrafas” – Bole´s Alley) for a live Bossa Nova presentaon. (Entrance fee included, food and beverage not included) *It must be reconfirmed, depending on the specific date*. The set of clubs and bars, located at Duvivier Street, in Copacabana, were known as bole´s alley, since the 1950s. The name probably originated from the atude of some neighboring residents, who used to throw boles in reacon to the noise made by the clients of the bars. In the early 1960s, it became known as the “Temple of Bossa Nova”, with live presentaons. The Bole´s Bar is open unl today, aer renovaons.

 

Day 5 – Rio de Janeiro
Breakfast. Transfer to the airport.
