Chapada das Mesas is located in the city of Carolina, in the south of Maranhão state, at Tocantins Valley region. With a huge ecotourism potential, Chapada das Mesas offers its visitors a dazzling set of waterfalls, trails, caverns and generous landscape. The plateau is cut by 22 different rivers. The temperature in the region ranges from 36°C to 19°C, with the milder temperatures in June and July. The high season is from July to September, which is when the fluvial beaches along Tocantins River appear. For tourists in search of fascinating landscapes, it is a good choice due to the diversity of environments, such as forests, plateaus, rivers and waterfalls in caverns.

Itinerary Suggested

DAY 1 – SAO LUIS
Arrival in Sao Luis and transfer to Luzeiros hotel. Accommodation and balance the day at leisure.

DAY 2 – SAO LUIS/ IMPERATRIZ/ CAROLINA
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the airport to board the short flight to Imperatriz city. Arrival and road transfer to Carolina, the gate city for the Chapada das Mesas (approx. 2 hours and a half journey). Accommodation at Pousada dos Lajes.

DAY 3 – CAROLINA
After breakfast, depart towards Riachão, where the “Encanto Azul” is located, a secret spot of amazing nature. We will stop the car and continue by hiking down the canyon, in the woods, to arrive at a natural pool with crystalline water coming from the rocks. Then we continued to Santa Barbara falls, one of the biggest ones in Chapada with 70 meters of altitude, with time to swim. Return to pousada and evening at leisure.

DAY 4 – CAROLINA
Breakfast at hotel and departure to São Romão Waterfall, sanctuary of the Swallows, 86 Km away from the city. 53 Km of the path is through the savanna with the possibility to watch specimens of the local fauna (approx. 3 hours journey). This waterfall is the largest one in volume of water. Visit the Prata Waterfall, where there is a group of 3 waterfalls formed by the Farinha river. Return to the hotel at the
end of the day and evening at leisure.

DAY 5 – CAROLINA
Breakfast at hotel and departure in 4×4 vehicle to Capelao falls, located 42 km away from the city, with 7 Km of the path through the savanna. We will stop the car and continue by hiking along 2 km until the falls. The name is due to the “capelão” monkeys once found in the area. Time for swim at the clear lake with green water and return on the same trek. Departure for the Tourism Complex to have lunch (not
included). Then we continue on an elevated trail made of wood to admire the view of the canyon. Return to the hotel at the end of the day and evening at leisure.

DAY 6 – CAROLINA/ IMPERATRIZ / SAO LUIS
Breakfast and check out. Departure to Portal da Chapada, a 70 meters plateau from where we can admire the breathtaking view. Then we continue by road to Dodo falls, with 8 meters of altitude. You may enjoy the natural slider on the falls. Departure directly to the airport for the short flight to Sao Luis. Arrival in Sao Luis and transfer to Luzeiros hotel. Accommodation and evening at leisure.

DAY 7 – SAO LUIS
Breakfast at hotel and departure to the airport
