Land of Rubber and Chico Mendes

/ per person
(0 Reviews)

Located in the southwest of the Brazilian Amazon, Acre has the dense tropical forest that covers most of its territory, the main attraction for ecotourism. Rich in Biodiversity, Acre is the land of Chico Mendes and the ‘People of the Forest’, who for
generations have been extracting sustenance for their families from the rubber plantations and Brazil nuts in the valleys of the Juruá River and the Acre River. The importance of the forest for these populations gave rise to struggles such as that of rubber tapper leader Chico Mendes, who died in 1988 in the city of Xapuri, who made history for defending the rights of the so-called forest peoples. His name is now internationally recognized as a symbol of the struggle to preserve the environment. And Xapuri, his land, which was the cradle of the struggle for the incorporation of Acre into Brazil, is considered the capital of the country’s ecological conscience.

Rio Branco, its capital, is a peculiar city, not only for its multicultural population, with different beliefs and customs, but also for its architecture, which mixes modern and old buildings. Acre has several attractions for visitors, especially the native rubber plantations near Xapuri, such as the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve and the Pimenteira and Cachoeira rubber
plantations, where the rhythm of life in the forest and the daily life of rubber tappers can be experienced by visitors. When it comes to Ecotourism, the Juruá Valley is one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity in the Amazon. Its main attractions are the Serra do Divisor National Park, located on the border with Peru, and the lands inhabited by the Ashaninka Indians. Acre also offers attractions such as balloon flights over Geoglyphs, visits to the Flor de Lótus – Santo Daime community, a rich indigenous handicraft, in addition to regional festivals such as the Yawa Festival, when For a week, the Indians dance, sing, paint themselves and participate in various types of games and games played by their ancestors.
